Understands and applies mathematics of democratic decision making

The mathematics of democratic decision making refers here to the mathematical concepts and methods needed to make decisions in a democratic society related to voting, fair division, and apportionment.

To be informed and productive citizens in a democratic society, students need to understand and apply the basic mathematics of preferential voting and associated vote-analysis methods such as majority, plurality, runoff, points-for-preferences (Borda method), and pairwise-comparison (Condorcet method). Students also should understand and be able to apply fair division techniques (such as fairly dividing a cake or an estate) and apportionment methods (such as those used to apportion seats in congress).
